INTERVIEW WITH

Cristina Marjinean, founder of Verso Visual

FEBRUARY 2024

Our “Interview with …” format is back and we decided to start in-house with the founder of Verso Visual, Cristina Marjinean. Find more about how everything began and how to keep growing in a market that changes from year to year.

Q: How did it all begin & what was that light bulb moment when you decided to launch Verso Visual?

A: In the early years of my career, I had the opportunity to meet many talented designers who passionately believed in their vision and wanted to make a difference with their brands. I was always fascinated by their stories, and talking for hours over coffee, they often revealed to me that one of the obstacles in they loomed was the confusion in finding the right digital tools to launch their own e-commerce in an economically sustainable and autonomous way. I wanted to help and since this need was shared by many, one day I thought: "Why not create and offer a service "sewn" specifically for them?" So in 2017 I decided to launch Verso Visual, an independent studio whose team takes shape each time according to the real needs of the client.

Q: What are your brand values and how do you translate them into your daily operations/creative process?

A: I believe that the real beauty lies in the little nuances that distinguish us. This is why we pay particular attention to the stories behind the launch of a brand and then translate their uniqueness through design.

Q: What was your background before you started?

A: Lucky enough to find my web and digital design passion young, I fueled my curiosity with a Bachelor's and Master's degree at Iulm University in Milan. Launching my career at Vogue Condenast's digital department, I then honed my UX skills in the Milanese agencies, crafting experiences for global brands like Wella, Sky, Feltrinelli, and Moet & Chandon.

Q: Where do you find the inspiration?

A: Working many hours in front of the screens, in my spare time I like immersing myself in nature by discovering new places and cities. In those moments I often focus on small details, from light play to color and texture contrast, and then imagine how I could convey the same feeling and emotion in a web page.

Q: What has been your biggest career highlight with your business to date?

A: Hmmm interesting question...certainly the fact that Verso Visual turned 7 years old this year indicates that what we do is needed and appreciated by our clients. But personally, my greatest satisfaction is when our customers thank me for the trusting relationship that we established that goes beyond a simple work delivery.

Q: And what’s the greatest lesson you’ve learned from your business growth?

A: Working in a field that changes from year to year, it is very important to stay up-to-date and open to new changes. Curiosity is your superpower! You have to keep learning, testing, and iterating like your future depends on it (because it does!)

Q: What is the best career advice you have received?

A: Don't be afraid to go the extra mile. It may seem like a small thing, but it can make a big impact to your clients.

Q: What do you do when you don't know the answer to a question or new situation?

A: I believe that nowadays you can find all the information you need by doing research and asking the right questions. You always have to be honest with yourself and take action if you are not sure of the answer.

Q: What is your morning routine?

A: For the past few months, I have eliminated my morning coffee to start my day slowly (…when possible). I try not to pick up my phone right away but enjoy the serenity of my home and family before starting my scheduled day. This recharges me so much and allows me to work with more energy and dedication.

Q: We know that launching an activity means being in charge of so many different activities. What are the top 3 ways you organize your work?

Those who know me well tease me about my passion for Excel and Presentations, both for organizing my work as my personal life. I chose a simple intuitive toolkit (like Google Workspace, thank you to exist)  and use it to its full potential, constantly.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months for your brand/business?

In 2023 we launched our e-commerce platform with coordinated Template Sets that cover three digital touchpoints: e-commerce website, newsletters and social media. We have lots of new things coming up and can't wait to discover the feedback from our community!
